"Thailand's Landmark" First in Southeast Asia to Legalize Same-Sex Marriage!

Thailand has made history as the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, following the senate's approval of the final reading of the marriage equality law on Tuesday.

This groundbreaking legislation, which passed the lower house of parliament in March, has been celebrated as a “monumental step forward” by activists and politicians who have been advocating for it for over two decades.

“We are very proud to make history,” said Plaifah Kyoka Shodladd, a member of the parliamentary panel on same-sex marriage. “Today, love triumphed over prejudice. After fighting for more than 20 years, we can finally say that this country has marriage equality.”

The bill garnered near-unanimous support in the senate, mirroring its reception in the lower house, and is now set to be approved by King Maha Vajiralongkorn.

120-Day Countdown to Implementation

The newly approved law will come into effect 120 days after its publication in the royal gazette, marking a monumental step forward for LGBTQ+ rights in Thailand.

Celebrations Erupt at Government House

Following the landmark vote, members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies gathered at Government House in Bangkok to celebrate. Waving rainbow flags, cheering, and raising their fists in solidarity, the atmosphere was electric with joy and pride.

Thailand Joins Asian Pioneers in Marriage Equality

Thailand has officially become the third country in Asia, after Taiwan and Nepal, to legalize same-sex marriage. Known for its vibrant LGBTQ+ culture, Thailand's move is a significant milestone in the fight for equality.

Equal Rights for All Couples

Last year, the prime minister promised that his administration would ensure same-sex couples receive the same rights as heterosexual couples. The new law grants same-sex couples access to benefits such as healthcare and inheritance rights, which have long been out of reach.

A Statement of Leadership

“This law underscores Thailand’s leadership in promoting human rights and gender equality in the region,” stated the Civil Society Commission of marriage equality, activists, and LGBTQ+ couples.

Stay tuned for more updates as Thailand continues to make history with this progressive legislation.
